I was reading all upstream tickets linked from https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal/issues/2979753 and all are reaching the same conclusion: this a Symfony serializer, "by design", problem. Indeed, I see no other solution in the current situation.

Apart from the conceptual issue, the MR looks good. I only see some nits that I can fix myself.
