Initial work to apply changes to branch of standalone module #3318490

This takes the work from MR !90 that was done while this code was part of the Recurring Events module and applies it to this standalone, separate module.

This really needs to be done as a separate branch for working with Group v2 since it cannot support both Group v1 and Group v2 at the same time.
