Apply patch from #4: skip array_merge on new entity_target.

This is the bandana patch from comment #4 of issue #3371339, committed as a baseline. A follow-up commit replaces this with a translation-aware fix per the findings in comment #7 (isNew() breaks multi-mapping on new entities and does not handle new translations on existing entities).
