Resolve #3146351 "Automated drupal 9"

Melissa Bent requested to merge issue/byteplant_email_validation-3146351:3146351-automated-drupal-9 into 8.x-1.x

After testing this module on my site, I encountered a few bugs that made it unusable in production. They are included in this merge request, but probably should be abstracted into separated tickets against the byteplant_email_validation module.

They were included here because I was under a tight deadline and did not have the time to split everything apart.
