Issue #3449583 by metasim, codebymikey, nicrodgers: Improve support for scheduler 1.x and 2.x

Don't think we should be supporting legacy versions, but in order to do that, we can relax the parameter type and hint at it instead.

1.x is apparently still a stable release, so we can still support it.
