Resolve #3146351 "Automated drupal 9"

After testing this module on my site, I encountered a few bugs that made it unusable in production. They are included in this merge request, but probably should be abstracted into separated tickets against the byteplant_email_validation module.

They were included here because I was under a tight deadline and did have the time to split everything apart.
