<h3 id="summary-problem-motivation">Problem/Motivation</h3>
<p>When creating a node through the UI, an editor has the option to create a menu link directly through the Menu UI module. This is not currently supported through a YAML Content import resulting in a difficult scenario for creating menu links for created pages.</p>
<p>Menu links cannot be defined directly as properties on the entity structure since the Menu UI module handles this through form alter and submit hooks instead of node save hooks. (See <code>menu_ui_form_node_form_alter()</code> and <code>menu_ui_form_node_form_submit()</code>.) Because of this implementation, any properties defined on the import content are never assigned since YAML Content uses the entity save function instead of mimicking a form submission.</p>
<h3 id="summary-interim-workarounds">Interim Work-Arounds</h3>
<p>Until a full solution for this is implemented, there are a couple of stop-gap solutions that may be applicable.</p>
<h4>Manually Create a Menu Link</h4>
<ol>
<li>Define the node content entity</li>
<li>Afterward, define a menu link entity for import</li>
</ol>
<p>When creating the original entity, it may help to define a path alias explicitly for the menu link to point to. Below is an example:</p>
<div class="codeblock">
<pre><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php<br></span><span style="color: #007700">- </span><span style="color: #0000BB">entity</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"node"<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">type</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"page"<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">title</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"Home"<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">status</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #0000BB">1<br> uid</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #0000BB">1<br> path</span><span style="color: #007700">:<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">alias</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">'/home'<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">pathauto</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #0000BB">false<br></span><span style="color: #007700">- </span><span style="color: #0000BB">entity</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"menu_link_content"<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">title</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"Home"<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">menu_name</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"main"<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">weight</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #0000BB">0<br> link</span><span style="color: #007700">:<br> </span><span style="color: #0000BB">uri</span><span style="color: #007700">: </span><span style="color: #DD0000">"internal:/home"<br></span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span></pre></div>
<h4>Create Menu Links After the Import</h4>
<p>Using the post-import hook, <code>hook_yaml_content_post_import()</code>, iterate over the created content and create menu links as needed.</p>
<h3 id="summary-proposed-resolution">Proposed resolution</h3>
<p>Implement a custom event subscriber for the entity post-save event (Added in <span class="drupalorg-gitlab-issue-link project-issue-status-info project-issue-status-7"><a href="https://www.drupal.org/project/yaml_content/issues/2880023" title="Status: Closed (fixed)">#2880023: Back-port Event Dispatching from 8.x-2.x</a></span> to check for menu links that need to be created. This should listen for nodes being saved and check for the following structure existing on the node import content:</p>
<pre>- entity: node<br> type: article<br> # Contain all menu link-specific data in a single attribute.<br> menu:<br> # Identify a menu machine name.<br> menu_name: main_menu<br> # Need to determine the best way to dynamically identify a parent link.<br> parent: 123<br> # Defaulting this to the node title would be a nice feature.<br> title: 'Example Title'<br> description: 'Example Description'<br> # Making this optional and defaulting to 0 would be helpful.<br> weight: 0</pre><h3 id="summary-remaining-tasks">Remaining tasks</h3>
<ol>
<li>Create patch for added event subscriber</li>
<li>Review and confirm functionality</li>
<li>Document added functionality (Example import content and example snippets)</li>
