<p>After some struggle, we just had a great breakthrough that I wanted to share in case someone else gets stumped on this. It has to do with applying spamspan to CCK fields inherited from parent/grandparent nodes.</p>
<p>We have an extremely complex site, where nodes have complex grandparent/parent/child relationships. We use Node Relativity to establish this. The "grandparent" is a content type <i>Provider Profile</i>, the "parent" is a <i>Location</i>, and the "child" is a <i>Resource</i>. Users create a Provider Profile (uses Content Profile, but that's irrelevant), which requires an email address. Then they create one or more Locations, which asks for but does not require an email address (if it's the same as in their Provider Profile). Same goes for Resources -- they register multiple "resources" (services) that their agency provides to the public -- one or more at each Location. But, again, they only enter an email address for that resource if it differs from the one entered for its parent (Location) or grandparent (Provider Profile). When we display, we use Content Template (Contemplate) module, which enables us to conditionally display the email address for a Resource.</p>
<p>In order to gracefully display one field, printing but obfuscating the appropriate email address for this resource, we can't use the normal method for displaying a SpamSpan-filtered CCK Email field in Contemplate. Normally, we would just put:</p>
<p><code>field_email[0]['safe']</code></p>
<p>But if you're inheriting the email field, you need to use conditional code -- but the ['safe'] selector will no longer work. If you're reading this, you've probably already found this out...</p>
<p>Now the trick is to use the spamspan() function to manually apply the filter to your email address on output. Here's our whole chunk of code:</p>
<pre><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">if (</span><span style="color: #0000BB">$node</span><span style="color: #007700">-></span><span style="color: #0000BB">field_email_3</span><span style="color: #007700">[</span><span style="color: #0000BB">0</span><span style="color: #007700">][</span><span style="color: #DD0000">'safe'</span><span style="color: #007700">] ) { </span><span style="color: #FF8000">//check for existence of node's own email -- no need for spamspan() here </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span><br> <div class="email"><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">print </span><span style="color: #0000BB">$node</span><span style="color: #007700">-></span><span style="color: #0000BB">field_email_3</span><span style="color: #007700">[</span><span style="color: #0000BB">0</span><span style="color: #007700">][</span><span style="color: #DD0000">'safe'</span><span style="color: #007700">]; </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span></div><br><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">} elseif (</span><span style="color: #0000BB">$parent</span><span style="color: #007700">-></span><span style="color: #0000BB">field_email_2</span><span style="color: #007700">[</span><span style="color: #0000BB">0</span><span style="color: #007700">][</span><span style="color: #DD0000">'email'</span><span style="color: #007700">] ) { </span><span style="color: #FF8000">//check for existence of parent's email -- apply spamspan() </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span><br> <div class="email"><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">print </span><span style="color: #0000BB">spamspan</span><span style="color: #007700">(</span><span style="color: #0000BB">$parent</span><span style="color: #007700">-></span><span style="color: #0000BB">field_email_2</span><span style="color: #007700">[</span><span style="color: #0000BB">0</span><span style="color: #007700">][</span><span style="color: #DD0000">'email'</span><span style="color: #007700">]); </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span></div> <br><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">} elseif (</span><span style="color: #0000BB">$grandparent</span><span style="color: #007700">-></span><span style="color: #0000BB">field_email_1</span><span style="color: #007700">[</span><span style="color: #0000BB">0</span><span style="color: #007700">][</span><span style="color: #DD0000">'email'</span><span style="color: #007700">]) { </span><span style="color: #FF8000">//check for existence of grandparent's email -- apply spamspan() </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span><br> <div class="email"><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">print </span><span style="color: #0000BB">spamspan</span><span style="color: #007700">(</span><span style="color: #0000BB">$grandparent</span><span style="color: #007700">-></span><span style="color: #0000BB">field_email_1</span><span style="color: #007700">[</span><span style="color: #0000BB">0</span><span style="color: #007700">][</span><span style="color: #DD0000">'email'</span><span style="color: #007700">]); </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span></div> <br><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB"><?php </span><span style="color: #007700">} </span><span style="color: #0000BB">?></span></span></pre>
