PerimeterX blocks legitimate AI tools from accessing issues on Drupal.org

Problem/Motivation

Drupal.org uses PerimeterX for bot detection and protection. However, this security measure blocks legitimate AI assistants like Perplexity from accessing publicly available issue pages, even when users request information from these resources.

When attempting to fetch content from Drupal.org issue pages (e.g., https://git.drupalcode.org/project/drupalorg/-/work_items/3457398), Perplexity receives an "Access to this page has been denied" message stating: "You have been blocked because we believe you are using automation tools to browse the website."

This creates an accessibility barrier for users who rely on AI assistants to summarize, analyze, or retrieve information from Drupal.org issues. Other AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini can successfully access these pages, indicating inconsistent behavior across different automated systems.

Steps to Reproduce

Use Perplexity AI assistant (with Claude Sonnet 4.5 or ChatGPT as LLM)

Request to read or summarize a Drupal.org issue page (e.g.,
https://www.drupal.org/project/drupalorg/issues/3457398
)

Observe the PerimeterX block message with reference ID

Test Results

Test prompt:

Can you read the content of https://www.drupal.org/project/drupalorg/issues/3457398? If yes, summarize it, if not, explain why not.

Perplexity with Claude Sonnet 4.5 as LLM:

I cannot directly read the content of that Drupal.org issue because the website blocked the automated access. When attempting to fetch the URL, Drupal.org's bot protection (PerimeterX) denied access, returning a "You have been blocked because we believe you are using automation tools to browse the website" message.

Perplexity with ChatGPT 4 as LLM:

It is not possible to read that issue page right now because access is blocked by Drupal.org's bot protection, which denies automated requests even with standard browsing capabilities enabled. The page returns an "Access to this page has been denied" message that cites suspected automation, potential JavaScript blocking, or missing cookies as reasons, and it provides a reference ID for contacting.

ChatGPT:

Yes — I can access the page and here is a summary of the issue on Drupal's issue tracker.

Gemini:

Yes, I can read the content of that webpage.

Proposed Resolution

Consider adding Perplexity's user agents to the allowlist in PerimeterX configuration, similar to how other legitimate AI assistants are permitted. This would enable users to leverage AI assistants for accessing publicly available Drupal.org content while maintaining protection against malicious bots.
