Installing Drupal currently gives you a mostly empty box. There is no demo content nor much preconfigured functionality. This makes for a weak first impression and makes it hard for the evaluator to connect the dots and find out what Drupal can do for them.

The Out of the Box initiative (OOTB) aims to improve this situation by providing a demo of Drupal core.

The goal is to add sample content presented in a well designed theme, presented as a food magazine. Using recipes and feature articles this example site will make Drupal look much better right from the start and help evaluators explore core Drupal concepts like content types, fields, blocks, views, taxonomy, etc.

Together this will also be a useful tool for agencies to demo what Drupal can do for their (potential) clients.

What are we putting into the box?

A demo food magazine website called “Umami”

With recipe, feature article and simple page content types

Sample content for recipes and feature articles: text and photography

A custom designed theme

An install profile that loads the sample content and installs the custom theme

Meet the initiative team

@kjay – lead designer and writer

@markconroy - frontend developer

@smaz – backend dev, working on the install profile

@laurii – frontend core maintainer

There are more people working on this. Meet everybody in the dedicated #out-of-the-box Slack channel. (Not yet on Drupal Slack? Get your invite here)

How you can help

Contribute your time and skills. The Umami demo is selectable as an install profile via Drupal's GUI since Drupal 8.6.0, but there are many things still to do, including but not limited to

Demonstrate existing core stable features not yet present, for example, Drupal's multilingual capabilities

Adopt new Drupal features as they become stable in minor releases of Drupal

Completing outstanding features of the initial designs

We are very active in the out-of-the-box Slack channel so please do join us there. Or check the Drupal 8 core calendar for details on the weekly initiative meeting. The link to the hangout used is typically posted in the Slack channel shortly before the meeting starts.

---

Use cases we are targeting to improve:

To convince a technical evaluator that Drupal allows them to build modern and beautiful websites

IT department inside a big company

A self starter inside a smaller company or smaller Drupal agency

Use cases we are not targeting to improve:

Big companies demonstrating big wow features (but it could eventually become the starting point for such a thing)

As a starting point for production sites

Sign offs given

The idea of building a demo using a food publishing company as a use case has been signed off by webchick and Dries.

How we are working

This initiative consists of the demo installation profile, the sample content, and the theme. Work on this is ongoing as Drupal.org issues tagged with the 'Umami demo' component. View Umami demo issues

All content written for Umami must follow the standardizations agreed on #2940146: Standardize writing style for Umami in English to ensure consistency. These build on top of the core user interface text standards.

Current priorities and issue triaging is done over via Google Docs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TfS5QB5dVUDZHkGmjWyzSoBAUWTWD4-m75WotmdaZ0M/edit#gid=0

The initial designs are found at #2900720: Designs for the Out of the Box experience intiative and the static style guide is at #2987164: [meta] Static styleguide for Umami demo
