The following is background information and a proposal for change to the Drupal.org homepage that we are planning to implement in the coming weeks. The Drupal.org Content Working Group and Drupal Association staff have reviewed and approved the following changes for the Drupal.org homepage.

We would like a period of public community feedback. Feedback is open until the 6th of April. At that time, we will incorporate the feedback into this revision of the Drupal.org homepage.

Background: #2497127: [META] Evolving Drupal.org front page

Current homepage click trends

With the current layout of the homepage, 39% of traffic click on one of two calls to action:

Get Started with Drupal (17%)

Develop with Drupal (22%)

Incremental (and frequent) improvements based on content strategy

In order to support content strategy implementation, we are posting a series of incremental changes to the content model and homepage. As each step of the content model is implemented, we will post additional changes for feedback.

The immediate needs these changes will address are the following:

Accommodate the new Try Drupal program

Better highlight Drupal Jobs

Better highlight Drupal Supporters program

Adjust ad size to industry standard 300x250

Try Drupal is a new program that has been established to help connect newcomers to Drupal.org with a quality demonstration of Drupal's capability. The Drupal Association has worked with our premium hosting supporters to create a program that will give users access to an installation of Drupal in 20 minutes or less. This program will be a key way for Drupal.org to affect the growth of Drupal usage. The program is also a revenue program for the Drupal Association to help fund ongoing improvements to Drupal.org.

Step 1 changes to Drupal.org homepage

Includes section pages we can currently link to

Includes the most clickable links on the current front page

Wireframe with user activity and persona called out

Mockup

Elements added

Try Drupal call to action

Greater emphasis on news (may add an additional headline to the list)

Services call to action

Jobs call to action

Supporters highlighted for their commitment to Drupal.org

More examples of featured case studies to highlight Drupal's usage

Elements removed

Removing elements and links from a homepage is always a challenge. There will undoubtedly be disagreement about what should be removed. Removal decisions were based on frequency of clicking and alignment with homepage and site goals.

Map of contributions (few clicks and does not trigger a user action to learn more or get involved)

Counts of people, countries and languages (not actionable and may be misleading as user counts are not indicative of active users of the site, merely accounts created)

Distributions (few clicks, less than .8% of traffic goes to this page, need a better way to highlight distributions on subsequent section pages as part of content strategy)

Future changes to support content strategy

As the new content model is built out, additional incremental changes to the homepage will be implemented.
