[Meta] Drupal AI UX Design
>>> [!note] Migrated issue Reported by: [breidert](https://www.drupal.org/user/135619) >>>
Define the 10 Most Important User Journeys for Drupal AI

Purpose

The goal of this issue is to prepare a clear and structured foundation for UX design work on Drupal AI. In this phase, we will not create or redesign any interfaces. Instead, we will define and document the 10 most important user journeys, providing the clarity needed for UX designers to later improve the experience.

Context

Drupal AI is a powerful but complex system. Its configuration interfaces have evolved quickly, without a unified UX strategy. As a result, while functionality is strong, usability and visual experience lag behind commercial products that offer smoother, more guided workflows.

Since Drupal AI is under active development, we cannot apply a traditional UX-first product development process. Instead, the UX work must adapt to an existing and evolving product. This makes clear, structured journey documentation essential before design improvements begin.

Objectives

The briefing aims to:

Identify and describe the 10 most important user journeys for Drupal AI.

Structure each journey so it can later be used as the foundation for UX design.

Provide sufficient documentation and visual reference (screenshots, flowcharts) for UX designers to understand the current experience.

Deliverables

The outcome of this work should be a User Journey Documentation Package containing:

List of 10 key user journeys – prioritized based on user importance, frequency, and business value.

Journey descriptions – written in Job-to-be-Done format (e.g., "When [situation], I want to [motivation], so I can [expected outcome]").

Journey flowcharts – visual representations showing the current flow of actions users take to complete their tasks.

Screenshots – capturing the current UI for each step of the journey.

Pain points and observations – notes about usability issues or inconsistencies to help guide future UX design.

Process

1. Research and Review

Explore existing Drupal AI features and configuration interfaces.

Identify frequent user tasks and high-value use cases.

2. Journey Selection and Prioritization

Work with stakeholders to agree on the 10 journeys to be documented.

Prioritize based on user impact and technical importance.

3. Journey Documentation

Write each journey in Job-to-be-Done format.

Create a flowchart showing current steps.

Capture screenshots for each step.

4. Journey Summary Sheet

For each journey, create a 1-page summary with description, flow, screenshots, and notes.

Expected Outcome

At the end of this project, we will have a complete, prioritized set of user journeys that clearly describe how users interact with Drupal AI today. This documentation will serve as the **foundation for future UX design work**, enabling designers to create more intuitive, visually cohesive, and user-friendly experiences.

Next Step

Once the journey documentation is complete, the next phase will be UX concepting and redesign, where designers will:

Identify opportunities for simplification and visual coherence.

Propose new UX flows and interface layouts.

Create prototypes for validation.

Additional information

As preparation for this issue a Google Doc was created with screenshots of the first user journey.

For a good design process the strategy and the goals of the product have to be defined clearly. For Drupal AI this can be found on https://new.drupal.org/ai/announcement in the linked Drupal AI Strategy PDF.

Example of user flows and journey maps in Figma for flows in Drupal Core

Drupal CMS interface screens

Drupal CMS Design System

For the UX work we want to collaborate with Drupal CMS to re-use as much of the prior work as possible.
